1394 TRADE ASSOCIATION PRESS RELEASE

1394 Automotive Technology Seminar to Feature Innovative New Infotainment, Driver Assist Camera, and IP over 1394 Demonstrations for In-Vehicle Networks

April 30 Seminar in Dearborn to Highlight the 1394 Auto Standard’s High Bandwidth, Flexible, Extensible, Benefits

Dallas, April 23, 2009 – The 1394 Trade Association will sponsor an Automotive Technology Seminar April 30, featuring presentations by industry leaders and the latest products and innovations that are making 1394 Automotive the next global standard for in-vehicle networking.

The seminar begins at 1 pm Thurs., April 30 at the Dearborn Inn Marriott. It will provide the industry with a comprehensive view of the 1394 Automotive standard and use cases for the vehicle.  Topics to be covered include network applications; standards overview; interconnect system solutions; 1394 device technology; software; testing/diagnostics; and a system overview. For more information about how to attend visit http://www.1394ta.org/Events/Q22009_TechSeminar.html. Registration will be available on site on the day of the seminar.

"Auto manufacturers can't afford multiple networks that will be obsolete in a few years after initial platform launch,” said Max Bassler, chairman of the 1394 Trade Association. “They want a single customizable in-vehicle network that will allow multiple ECUs, including driver assistance, navigation, Internet use and high quality audio/video modules to communicate seamlessly.  Outside connections to the world will interact and communicate over the 1394 Auto in-vehicle network."

Demos to Highlight Infotainment, Driver Assist Cameras, IP over 1394

Four demonstration sections will highlight the one-day seminar. The first is a comprehensive infotainment demonstration of multiple A/V streams transported throughout a vehicle. The infotainment exhibit will include simultaneous streaming of a camera, music player, and multiple DVDs.  The bandwidth of this system can support navigation, Internet and web access, digital audio, multiple DVD players, personal music players and other consumer electronics devices.  1394 Auto supports established content protection protocols and a wide range of compression technologies that enable security and maximum performance.

A second demonstration will feature 1394 Auto's driver assist capabilities, with four fully-synchronized cameras streaming uncompressed video, enabling real-time sensing and display on front, rear and side angles.  The driver assist demos will run on the VersaPHY extension to the base 1394 standard, which is designed to enable simple, low-cost, automotive cameras. It also includes bus analyzer showing bus utilization and demonstrating the availability of 1394 bus diagnostic equipment.

A third display will showcase IP running over 1394, which can enable telematics, travel assistance, system updates, and diagnostics, with the ability to download video and audio content to the vehicle for storage and playback.  Vehicle connectivity displays how the network can use 3G, Wi-Fi, terrestrial and wired options.

A fourth group of demos will show two different automotive grade cabling systems demonstrating the ability to carry signal and power over the same cable, providing power to remote devices.

In addition, the Trade Association will highlight ongoing projects and road map objectives, including standards for power over cable using 1394 specifications, and a 1394 Auto design guide featuring contributions from many member companies.

The 1394 Trade Association is a worldwide organization dedicated to the advancement of the IEEE 1394 (FireWire) standard. The 1394TA recently celebrated its 15th year of promoting 1394 and its one billionth 1394 port shipped. FireWire is used today in mass-market computer, entertainment, and professional products, and in a wide range of specialty applications such as music, defense, aerospace, industrial, and robotics products.
