1394 TRADE ASSOCIATION PRESS RELEASE1394 Trade Association Publishes New Reference Tables Guide to Assist Users in Maximizing FireWire Performance Includes Complete Tutorial, Reference Tables, for Calculating Bandwidth in Isochronous Streaming Applications San Francisco, May 17, 2010 – The 1394 Trade Association has published a comprehensive reference table white paper created to help designers optimize the use of the 1394 (FireWire) standard in their product designs. The paper, entitled “Reference Tables for FireWire Isochronous Bandwidth Usage,” was developed by Dimitrios Staikos of CodeMost, Inc., a member of the 1394 Trade Association’s board of directors. It provides concise explanations of how FireWire bandwidth operates, and includes tables that help users achieve their design objectives by correctly calculating the bandwidth required in a FireWire application that uses isochronous streaming. Tables are provided for users who intend to oversubscribe the available isochronous bandwidth to a specific extent. “FireWire is the ideal specification for moving audio and video in any application, but correct calculations are crucial to design success,” said Staikos. “While they are fundamentally simple, these measurements involve some rudimentary math and require some solid understanding of how FireWire works. This paper and the accompanying tables will assure that FireWire is not underutilized or overutilized to the point where the application could experience performance challenges.” “With higher FireWire speeds of 1.6Gbps and 3.2Gbps now available it is especially important that implementers understand the technology and use the available tools to maximize FireWire’s performance,” said Max Bassler, chairman of the 1394 Trade Association. “The reference tables and details provided in this work are invaluable to designers, and are an excellent complement to the Reference Tutorial and FireWire Design Guide documents we published earlier this year.” The new Reference Tables Guide is available on the 1394 Trade Association’s website at www.1394ta.org For more information:
